How Do You Know If You’re a Control Freak

Control freaks are meticulous as they don’t entertain any form of excuses nor take “No” for an answer. They are overly possessive and tend to put their emotions aside when making decisions. When we describe this type of person does it remind you of your boss? Or maybe These kinds of people know what they want and will go to any means to make sure they are in control of any situation.

They often think they have better ways of doing things. These set of people are known to always be busy because they channel their energy into many tasks. Instead of putting their emotions in check, they prefer controlling things around them.

Unfortunately, most of us turn to control freaks without even knowing it. Well, we have listed some of the signs you need to look out for, to check yourself from becoming a control freak.

10 Signs You Are a Control Freak

1. You Can Never Work as a Team

Working in a team environment puts a “control freak” in a situation where they would need to drop their controlling attributes. It is difficult for them to belong to a group where they have to share the contributions of the team’s success. Such people prefer to being a lone wolf versus working with others to achieve a common goal. Even when they eventually get involved, they try to dictate the tone, telling everybody what to do. So, if you possess such temperament, just have at the back of your mind that you are showing characteristics of a control freak.

2. Believe That Your Success is a Result of Your Hard Work

Control freaks are naturally ungrateful and it is difficult for them to appreciate anybody. These set of people believe that 100% of their success is as a result of their hard work. They always have the mentality that “failure is not an option” forgetting that the environment works in synergy to arrive at a common solution.

3. You Put in More Time Trying To Convince Others

If you continue looking for people who will behave exactly like you, you can end up living alone. But this is not the same way of thinking for control freaks. They want everybody to be like them. A control freak will spend more time trying to convince you to change rather than looking for ways to change their own attitude. And funny enough, they will go to any length (lecture, manipulate, or peer pressure) to make you become exactly like them.

4. They Have Trouble Staying In Relationships

What do you expect when you are trying to convince everybody else to be like you?Relationships where one of the partners is a control freak often do not last long. The relationship is often clouded with arguments around how things should be done. This is how it plays out…if the girl is a control freak, she will always want the guy to do things her way, and vice versa. This doesn’t just occur in personal relationships, but you also find such things in business relationships.  Control freaks will always want to be in charge of all the logistics  and plans, and make sure they are done their way.

5. Spend so Much Time Trying to Prevent Negative Things From Happening

Control freaks are partial pessimists, due to their unflinching belief in their abilities. They always have that thought that things will go wrong in their absence. So they do everything int heir power to make sure that bad things don’t happen, forgetting that there are things that are naturally beyond their control. So check yourself if all you try to do is to prevent bad things from happening even when nothing is going wrong.

6. You Like Doing Everything Yourself

Control freaks see themselves as Gods and they believe they are the best. So when there is a task, they barely delegate any responsibilities to others. They prefer doing it all alone. This attitude is not because they love working, rather, they don’t believe that you can do it better than them. And even when they happen to delegate something, they like to monitor every step of the process in order to make sure it is done using their guidelines.

7. They Barely Understand the Mistakes of Others

Since they don’t give room for mistakes, they barely accept or understand when a mistake has occurred. Even when the mistake is an accident, something that every other person will understand on a normal day, they will still like to emphasize the severity of the mistake. They always see mistakes as a sign of laziness, incompetence, e.t.c. because everybody “must succeed” regardless of the circumstances.

8. Always Want to Have the Last Word

Control freaks always want to win and they always believe they know it all. It is very difficult to win an argument against them. They always want to prove to you that you are wrong. If you don’t see it their way, the argument never stops. For example, If the argument is about how a particular task was carried out, don’t you dare mark that task as complete if you haven’t used the method of the “control freak.”

9. Being Judgmental

If you are always judging or criticizing others for their actions, then you are likely to turn into a control freak over time. To an average control freak, you can never do it right no matter the amount of effort one puts in. It is very hard to impress them. To them, their opinions are taken as facts, and it you are not living up to their expectations, then a control freak will not hesitate to let you know you are failing.

10. They hardly look cheerful

Hardly will you see a control freak smile or look cheerful. So if you keep up with the moody attitude, there might be possibilities you may be heading towards the path of becoming a control freak. So watch it!

Finally, you always have the option to seek the help of a professional psychologist should you notice any of these signs and would like to improve your behavior. One thing we would like to note is that having complete control over your own life is not always a bad thing. But trying to control the lives of others is when it can become problematic. Try to let those around you do their own thing and you could be shocked how much better it can make you feel.
